Care of silk fabrics
Silk is made of natural protein fibers that are more delicate and less resistant compared to synthetic fibers. Strong chemicals can break down these proteins, weakening the fabric. Therefore, avoid using bleach or strong chemical detergents. Wash silk pillowcases at a maximum temperature of 30 ºC ("SILK" or "DELICATES") using a gentle detergent specifically designed for silk. Hand wash silk sleep masks and hair ties in water no hotter than 30 ºC, using a detergent suitable for silk.
How often should I wash my silk items?
We recommend washing your silk products every 10-14 days to maintain optimal hygiene. If you use hair oils, face masks, or other products that can accumulate on the fabric, or if you sweat more, you may wash silk items more frequently. However, remember that while silk is durable, it also requires gentle care. Always adhere to proper silk washing instructions to maintain its quality. Frequent washing with harsh methods can shorten the lifespan of your silk pillowcase. It's a balance between maintaining cleanliness and preserving the integrity of silk.
Silk fabric drying
After washing, gently squeeze the water out of the silk. Do not wring or twist, as this can damage the fabric. It is recommended to dry silk items by laying them flat on a clean, dry towel. This allows the fabric to dry evenly and helps prevent changes in shape. Hanging the fabric can cause wet silk fibers to stretch, altering the original shape of the silk product. Avoid direct sunlight and never tumble dry silk fabrics – heat can alter the fabric's color and cause irreversible shrinkage.
Silk fabric ironing
If needed, silk pillowcases can be easily ironed. Use the lowest temperature setting on your iron specifically designed for silk fabric and iron the pillowcase while it is slightly damp. For additional protection, you can place another fabric between the iron and the silk item. Remember, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions, which may vary depending on the type of silk and its processing method. Typically, these instructions will be indicated on the label of the silk product.
How long does a silk product last in good quality?
The lifespan of silk products made from 22 momme mulberry silk can vary depending on usage and care. With proper care and usage, high-quality 22 momme mulberry silk products can last from 1 to 2 years or even longer. However, signs of wear and tear, such as thinning fabric, loss of luster, or weakening of the material, may indicate that it's time to replace them. Regularly changing and washing silk pillowcases can prolong their lifespan.
